The Yukarin Concert Experience 2006 – * fancy baby doll *

Going to one of Tamura Yukari’s concerts is quite something else. Her fans are very very dedicated, enthusiastic and organised. They are hardcore. 「田村ゆかり Concert Tour 2006 * fancy baby doll *」 in my mind, demonstrated to me the raw tenacity, the likes of which I have not see before.
Let it be said though, that the concert itself was well choreographed and put together. Yukarin is an excellent performer on stage. She has the range and consistency to deliver an outstanding performance throughout a versatile selection of her songs. The set list went something like this:

As always, Yukarin’s MC talks are the best. Highly entertaining stuff. The Mellow Mellow stick was out and about again and props to the security guards and cameramen who participated in her antics above and beyond the call of duty. Yukarin even mentioned the now infamous Rumble Roses XX videos circulating the blogosphere causing some stir and Desire for wealth has even issued an apology. But it’s all in good fun. These are the best bits and my reason for going to Yukarin’s concerts (apart from the desire to hear her sing live).
Getting back to her fans however. To be honest, I think the calls are getting out of hand. It’s one thing to shout “Hey hey hey” in time to the beat during parts of the song where she’s not singing. But it’s an entirely other matter when there’s incessant “Yukarin! Yukarin! Yukarin!” chanting during half the verses. Honestly guys, are you there to hear her perform or to make noise? It is without any doubt that if you are a first-timer to her concert, you can forget about hearing her perform most of her older songs and the calls are just too loud. Wait for the DVD. Fortunately, my favourites and possibly her best performed like Cursed Lily, Amazing Kiss and Black Cherry are either new (and therefore no calling) or are not suited to calls which meant I could wholly enjoy her performance for those. Don’t get me wrong, I respect the energy and dedication they put into making the calls and doing them on the night but there is such a thing as taking it too far.
Actually, I expect Yukarin’s concerts are always going to be like this. Excellent performance coupled with fandom’s raw tenacity and always some disturbing imagery to take away from the experience! (Don’t ask)
