TV reports of Mizuki Nana on Kouhaku round up
There’s now a sudden huge increase of exposure for Nana-chan on many different mainstream TV stations right after the Kouhaku announcement – she’s probably now going to start registering on some of the average Joe’s radar. The usual Budoukan, Dome live and Oricon top ranking achievements were brought up, instantly impressing those celebrities whom doesn’t know her (so you can see why those are big deals, even though say, that the Budoukan has less seating than Saitama Areana and that the top ranking Oricon album sales is like 1/10th of what it used to be. But once something gets imprinted it stays there for a long time in Japan, or humans in general). There’s also plenty of mentioning about her enka background to reaffirm her singing abilities. It’s interesting that one of the reports talked about the 2ch death threat made to Nana-chan as an indicator of why she is popular amongst the Akiba circle.
Another point worth pointing out is the Nana-chan is one of only two female artists to make a first appearance on Kouhaku (the other being Kimura Kaera).

Man, this is great and all that Nana-chan’s getting more coverage and anison and seiyuu artists are being treated in a more serious light, but couldn’t they pick a better song to pepper the public with than Mugen? I understand it’s her latest release so it makes sense, but still…out of her entire song collection, picking a mediocre one just makes me sad. :/

I find it interesting, that practically all coverage mentioned that she wanted to be an enka singer at the start. Giving a more ‘normal’ image, showing that she ain’t some ‘creepy’ otaku idol. Nana looks less confidant then usual during the mass photoshop in the announcement of her being on Kohaku. I don’t think I ever saw so many camera flashes at Nana.
I’m not surprised that alot of people doesn’t know her. She never had a mainstream TV appearence until Trickster, and that was only Music Fighter. Alot of people seems to be surprised she’s been a singer for about 10 years (she was signed to King Records at 2000 if I remember correctly) and still don’t know who she is.
Off topic- I want to laugh at Arashi. This year is their first time on Kohaku? They’ve been getting number ones for YEARS. Does this mean I can finally see them singing LIVE for once?

While the song in its entirity might be all over the place, Mugen’s chorus is pretty catchy though. Heck even I, after watching all these reports, had to go back to playing the song (and then skipping it promptly) just to get it out of my head.

She’s been singing longer if you count her Kondo Nana days. :) But yes nobody knows her in the general public, which isn’t surprising because the whole anime/anisong culture thing wasn’t brought into spotlight until very recently due to various economic and cultural reasons, TV appearances or not it wouldn’t matter much.
