Animelo Summer Live 2008 - Sunday Highlights

Famitsu is on their game again so official track listing can be found here.  As predicted, today was Niconico Douga Meme Song day, if you are a fan of nicodouga, especially of the Nicodouga Kumikyoku, you’ll no doubt get a massive kick from hearing the meme songs being performed full live - we definitely did.   Anyway again some highlights:

*  Omoide wa Okusenman performed by JAM Project as an opener.  What a starter!  Hang on, Makkun isn’t in there but replaced by Misato Aki.  Hmm what happened?

*   After the song, Kageyama Hironobu announced that Makkun fell sick, and her condition worsen because she forced herself to perform yesterday and the doctor gave her the order to not to perform today.  DAMN.

*  Misato Aki sang nicely - taking over Makkun’s role in such short notice and as the first performer, great effort on her part.

*  Elisa’s voice is simply beautiful.  After 2 acts the bar for the night is set pretty damn high.

*  After two slow songs from Elisa, angela Domestic Love Band started the night’s long run of goth-metal music.  It’s quite a departure of her old stuff.  Yeah, even Shangri-La was pretty out there.

* Sound Horizon had some interesting sounds, and lots of members and vocalists. My favourite part though has to be the electric violin in their music. Might check them out later.

* Yui’s goth band is a good gag act. I like how they made fun of themselves with the whole “toilet break act” gag, even though they were far from that level of terrible.

* Momoi Halko did a real-life Idolm@ster-style “performance accident” - she literally tripped and fell on all four after missing a landing from a jump. She recovered from it straight away though, that’s a pro performer right there.

* Mosaic.wav’s Gacha Gacha Kyu~~~ I was waiting for this piece and the fun metre explodes when everyone in the stadium does the hand gestures.

* Everyone sang true my heart - the call for “Kishimen!” was insane, Lelouch by the power of the Code Geass MAD meme orders you all to obey and sing!

*  Sakura Saori’s talking voice scares me since it sounds just like when she sings.  It’s like she’s constantly on helium or something.

*  No Kiss My Lips.  That is just not right. :(

*  miko (IOSYS) for Marisa - complete with the original flash movie on the big screen.  There’s something magical about everyone yelling “yi er san yi er san one two three one two three ichi ni san” at the same time.

*  Tori no Uta, another totally expected piece.  It’s a nice song except that for all of the 2 to 3 times I’ve seen it live Lia can never perform it well in a live situation and this time was no exception, which is a pity.

*  iM@S performed a medley of their most famous songs, which is awesome because there is just no way they can get through all their cool songs any other way.  Asapon was the most in character, Mingosu did well with her solo Aoi Tori section, and even Nakamura Eriko managed to sing pretty well too.

*  Makka na Chikai was sooooo intense.  I’ve never seen so many people get so psyched up, except for JAM Project’s SKILL.

*  May’n does her Macross Frontier Sheryl act.  That’s all there is to say about it.

*  Psychic Lover does a ballad, wow.  It’s so not their usual image.

*  Hirano Aya improved her singing - it is no longer as painful as last year’s because she stopped trying so damn hard to do her weak attempt at a vibreto (thank god).

anisong Uninstall was another piece that I really want to hear live, and Ishikawa Chiaki delivers it in spades.

*  Woo, another new unreleased song in full - Gundam 00 second season’s ending Prototype.

*  Gundam-gasum continues with a medley by a Ishikawa Chiakii/Yonekura Chihiro duet doing their most famous Gundam themes.

I can fly!  You can fly!  We can fly! Motto motto!

Today’s concert was enjoyable in a completely different way compared with yesterdays.  While yesterday’s - as expected by such a strong line up of strong singers - wins purely by the sheer high quality of the performers at performing live, today’s was exciting for the concentrated bursts of pure FUN as meme songs and recent cult hits gets performed live on stage and how everyone joins in with the acts at the same time to create an unbelievable live atmosphere.  So both days were awesome in their own rights.

Also it looks like they’re already planning for next years Animelo, so see you next AniSummer!

Hmm… I need the DVD right now! Hopefully will be on sale before Christmas time.

Btw, did Misato Aki sing No Border, Rocks and SKILL with JAM Project too?

Being the crazy fool I am, I caught a decent majority of the selected screening Nico Nico had which wasn’t too bad. Even without Makkun, JAM Project pulled one heck of a showing at the end although I think there was some audio problems as 1/2 the time I couldn’t hear them correctly.

Seeing JAM Project, iM@S, Lia, etc from Nico Nico plus your summaries on the concert really has me hype about the eventual DVD release. It just kills we’re gonna have to wait a few months til the release (last year’s was roughly in Nov if I remember); I just pray they’ll do a Blu Ray release as well. Now THAT would be insane XD

  3. Mei Says:

@Ruu: Misato Aki only sang with them at the beginning of the concert. The later performances we’re just the four guys, so it was pretty testosterone infused, lol.

Man, my friends and I on IRC ended up watching the Nico Live stream. At first it was a traffic nightmare (especially for us on the other side of the world.) but eventually we managed to get in and we were so psyched. It was interesting how each user had a “seat number”; I ended up on the 2nd tier though, lol. The tiers seemed to have affected which stream of comments we saw (the 1st tier can only see comments from other users in the 1st tier).

Basically the concert was split into 5 parts; performances we got to see and parts we didn’t. The ones we didn’t get to see were cut-off with a waiting sign. There were 3 performance sessions we got to see, but we were waiting about an hour in between. Lots of random spamming of comments during the waiting, but it was interesting. Many people were like “screw this I’m watching Geass”, lol.

I think we saw the beginning up until Misato Aki, then Momoi to IM@S, then finished with JAM Project. So basically nico watchers got to see most of the otaku-centric performances. How fitting. But I didn’t care, it was enough that we got to see anything at all. It was great to see everything live; the video quality was pretty decent. All the video angles were probably from the same ones that would be for the DVD release, so maybe you can say we got a sneak peak at the DVD?

I hope Nico does this again for next year.

    WTB! WTB!

I would like to state for the record I was tearing during portions of the concert.

    1. Momoi introducing her herself as Mosiac.wav and Under17. FYI the project leader of mosiac.wav was her former partner in U17. ONE NIGHT ONLY REUNION! Complete with Momoi’s pink round specs.

    2. YOSHIKI FUKUYAMA’S MAKKA NA CHIKAIIIIII! My god, the crowd was so pumped up when he screamed the title. I screamed myself hoarse.

    3. JAM’s SKILL. Seeing the YOU CAN FLY routine in a video and actually doing with the band at the venue is awesome.

I want to do this again next year. Time to start saving up :D

  6. natto Says:

the setlist actually leaked a day or two before the concert. they did originally have Misato singing Okusenman with Jampro, while Makkun was supposed to sing Get along with May’n. looks like they cut out the latter altogether. bummer. :( i hope Makkun gets well soon!

  7. omo Says:

omg, makkun/may’n get along would’ve been super epic D:

    Get well soon makkun

  8. Dom Says:

Go To DLB! Go To DLB!

  9. houkoholic Says:

    > hey did originally have Misato singing Okusenman with Jampro

Which meant that Makkun would’ve had her part to sing in Okusenman (most probably with Misato Aki together in certain verses), so Mistao Aki still had to fill in.

  10. dodgethis_sg Says:

If Gran Rodeo was the Rolling Stones, then Psychic Lover was Aerosmith that day then. :P

The scheduling was pretty crazy. All the high energy acts were scheduled back to back. I remember people all around doing a nervous laugh because they had just finished jumping wildly with 5 seconds to rest and then Bam, the next song hits and they realize it’s another big high energy one. From just Momoi to IM@S, I went through 12 ultra oranges and 6 ultra pinks which I had intended to save throughout the concert. I was left with almost no ultras left for JAM and had to be more conservative. Used up 6 AAAs too to power the neon lightsticks.

The best part of Momoi falling down is she was still singing mid-fall and only broke her tune for about half a second before picking it back up instantly before she even got off the ground.

I actually laughed out loud when Saori was singing her part of Yells. That was the funniest thing I’ve ever heard and will probably be my next favorite thing to see on DVD.

  13. dodgethis_sg Says:

Where do you guys get those uber bright orange ones from? I swear they alone lit up the arena during the Zettai Karen performance on day one!

We got the ultra oranges from a Tokyu Hands store. Probably not the best place to get them but they’re all over the city, easy to find, and have a decent selection. The one we went to (Ikebukuro Sunshine City) had a guy there specifically staffed to watch and keep refilling the glowstick shelves because there were so many shoppers in Animelo T-shirts just buying up entire baskets. There were also all sorts of electric ones too including giant light up batons that you sometimes see traffic cops use at night.

  16. sapilaut Says:

Damn i envy you guys who watched it live… All i can do is watch niconico with “that” quality of voice… But thanks a lot for the reviews, so i can actually expect Angela’s Shangri la?? And Makka na Chikai performed live?? Gonna get the dvd no matter what…

  17. dodgethis_sg Says:

Thanks for the info, paranda. Will take note of it for my next trip up there.

  18. Dom Says:

    @sapilaut:
Actually, you can expect Domestic Love Band’s Shangri-La. It’s quite different.

  19. AnimeGamer Says:

Man, wish I knew about this concert sooner to catch the Nico Douga stream.

Though - it sounds like JAM Project didn’t perform GONG, which is my favorite SRW song. Oh well.

Makka na Chikai - with a arena full of people and the rest of JAM Project singing along? DO WANT.

I seriously need to find out how I can obtain a copy of the DVD of this.
