Minami-ke radio: seiyuu draws “Sensei and Ninomiya-kun” manga
Believe it or not, I’m actually not the type that follows seiyuu radio shows. However this season had me following the Minami-ke radio “Minami-ke no Minakike”. I’m not sure why I’m attracted to this particular radio show - it’s probably the random-ness of it, as each episode has no particular theme to it and it goes in all sorts of direction, and the adlib nature of the radio show resembles the anime itself. Of course it has the added attraction of having two seiyuu that I’m interested in - Inoue Marina and Chihara Minori, and I’m starting to warm up to Sato Rina as well.
One example of the random-ness of the show was when they talked about the show-within-show, the love drama “Sensei and Ninomiya-kun”, that the Minami sisters watches. Since in the anime there really is no story to this show, one of the seiyuu, Inoue Marina if I recall correctly, suggested that they could draw a shoujo manga of the show, and they can each take turn drawing a chapter each week. To keep it short, the idea got the go ahead and they are now serialising the manga, so to speak.
Originally they were doing it for fun and they weren’t going to show it to anyone, but since Inoue Marina is such an excellent drawer, Chihara Minori’s childhood dream was to be a mangaka and apparently Sato Rina is said to be a good drawer too according to her wiki entry, it turned into something they didn’t quite expected, so they’re now giving the listeners a glimps of it by posting a couple of sample pages from their manga.
First you have Sato Rina’s:
And here you have Inoue Marina’s:
The three of them joked about publishing it in one of the episodes, maybe at Comiket or package it as a special in the DVD or something, and who knows, maybe just like this little idea it may come true.

I tend to listen to quite a bit of anime radio since you get to know more of the seiyuu’s personalities that way. Obviously Minakike is one of my top priorities as I like all 3 seiyuu & I’ve always followed Rina-chan’s/Minorin’s own radio shows. Rina’s not bad at drawing, she’s done some Negima-related sketches that I remember being pretty good. Some of the stuff Minorin drew for Haruhi was nice as well.
I’m an avid follower of Sensei & Ninomiya-kun too ^^;; as are the rest of the seiyuu cast. Like Goto Saori & Asanuma Shintaro, I wish they’d make ‘The Battle of Love’ game for real - I’d buy it in a flash.

They’re actually a lot better than I thought they’d be. Especially Inoue Marina’s.
If Kobayashi Yuu was to be part of this, I wonder what’d it look like. Hmm.

Yeah I know the radios are good for that, but I’m usually just too lazy to tune in, even with web radio and all that.
Speaking of Negima, just after this post I dug around for Sato Rina drawings and I found a webpage with the seiyuu from Negima doing sketches. Some of them are pretty amazing.

It seems to me that being able to draw is a more normal thing in Japan than elsewhere. Is that true? I’ve always been amazed at how well some seiyuu and personalities can draw. Those pages are good work.
I still don’t get Inoue Marina’s voice’s special appeal. I like it, but nothing special. I do think all three of them are doing well in this show, though. Especially Satou Rina.

I think the deeply rooted anime/manga culture plays a big part in the drawing. A lot of the Japanese kids will try to copy their favourite anime or manga character some stage in their childhood, and the more dedicated developes on it and more. Also this generation of seiyuu has a tendancy to be big otaku themselves when they were young who dreamed of getting into the anime/manga industry, so you end up having an unusually high concentration of good drawers in the sample as well.
